  68. Thank you for taking a look at the ECOGENE application (a program for
  69. the analysis of gene dynamics, by Wye Software.
  70.  
  71. Last minute changes would be reported here but all the files should be
  72. up to date. This file contains only a brief description of the program.
  73. Detailed information is provided by the included files (see packing.lst)
  74. and a extensive help file (ecogene.hlp).  Please read these sometime
  75. after setup.

  77. Ecogene is Windows(r) application for the analysis of gene dynamics in
  78. socially structured population.  It uses commonly collected ecological
  79. and behavioral data to estimate the change in gene correlations (a
  80. measure of genetic variation), inbreeding coefficients (a measure of
  81. how variation is apportioned in a population), and effective population
  82. sizes (a measure of the rate of loss of variation).
  83.  
  84. Ecogene provides a easy and intuitive interface for entry of ecological
  85. parameters, and each entry is cross-checked to ensure it is within
  86. its allowable.  This feature ensures that even novice users can produce
  87. reliable results and it aids in learning the basics of the ecology of
  88. social systems.

  90. Ecogene provides two means of viewing results.  First, the results are
  91. presented in tabulated form in an Results Pane.  These data may be
  92. cut and pasted in other applications, such a spreadsheets or statistical
  93. packages, for further analysis.  Of course, the data may be saved an
  94. imported into any application that can translate ASCII text files.  The
  95. second means of viewing the results is with graphs.  Graphs are presented
  96. for each of the types of data (correlations, inbreeding, and effective
  97. size).  These views may also be saved and printed.

  99. Ecogene comes with two types of online help, each available through the
  100. help menu.  ECOGENE.HLP provides the basics for running the application,
  101. and ECOMAN.HLP is a guide for understanding the basics of the underlying
  102. models.  It is strongly recommended that the end user consult both to
  103. get the most out of the application.

  125. ===== Installation =====================================

  127. General Information
  128. This distribution contains a compressed archive of all the files
  129. necessary to run ECOGENE.  This file (ECOGENE1.ZIP) should be copied
  130. to a temporary directory.  The archive can then be "unzipped" using
  131. either PKUNZIP or WINZIP.  The files contained in the archive are:
  132.  
  133. ECOGENE.EXE The executable program file
  134. ECOGENE.HLP The user's guide
  135. EGMANUAL.HLP The study guide
  136. BIVBX11.DLL A redistributable form of the Visual Basic Control Library
  137.  routines used by the program
  138. CHART2FX.VBX A redristibutable form of the Visual Basic Control used for
  139.  charting.
  140.  
  141. The DLL and VBX files are usually stored in the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM
  142. directory; however, this is not necessary.  I find it easier to remove
  143. all traces of an application if all its associated files are in the
  144. same directory, so I just leave this files in the same directory as the
  145. executable program.  You, of course, may do what every you like.  Just
  146. remember, these files must be in a directory included in the PATH
  147. statement of your AUTOEXEC.BAT file if you decide to move them.

  149. To Install the ECOGENE program:
  150. 1) Create a directory for the program (i.e. C:\ECOGENE)
  151. 2) Copy the file listed above from the temporary directory to the
  152.  directory created in step 1.

  154. Running the Gene Dynamics⌐ program
  155. There are several ways to run the ECOGENE program.  You can
  156.  simply double click on the file name (ECOGENE.EXE) in the File
  157.  Manager, or you can use the Run command in the File Menu of the Program
  158.  Manager.  If you would like to make a group and add an icon for the
  159.  Program Manager, follow these directions
  160.  
  161. 1) From the Program Manager's File menu, choose New
  162. 2) Click on the Program Group radio button and press OK.
  163. 3) In the Description field enter the name you would like to use (i.e.
  164.  WyeSoft)
  165. 4) From the Program Manager's File menu, choose New
  166. 5) Make sure the Program Item radio button is selected and press OK
  167. 6) In the Description field enter the name for the program (i.e.
  168. Ecological Genetics 1.0)
  169. 7) Press the Browse button
  170. 8) Navigate to the directory where you installed the program
  171. 9) Double click on the name of the program (ECOGENE.EXE)
  172. 10) Click on the OK button in the Program Item Properties dialog
  173.  
  174. Note: if you already have a program group that you would like to add the
  175.  icon to, simply omit steps 1-3.
